BC Social Workers Raise Concerns Over Ending Drug Decriminalization Pilot
The British Columbia Association of Social Workers (BCASW) has expressed serious concerns about the provincial government's decision to end BC's drug decriminalization pilot on January 31, 2026. In its January 18 media statement, the association warns that ending the pilot without an accessible system of care could worsen the toxic drug crisis and contribute to preventable deaths. BCASW calls for evidence-based harm reduction, improved access to treatment and recovery services, transparent reporting on outcomes, and a regulated system that addresses housing, income security, and long-term community support.
