DESCRIPTION

We will begin with the assumption that participants could benefit from both a refresher and a comprehensive understanding go factors to consider in addressing ethical issues.

Consequently, we will revisit meaning and roles of ethics in the profession, the different types of ethical issues, and the different SW codes of Ethics (BCCSW, CASW and NASW) emphasizing their purposes and limitations in addressing ethical issues.

Finally, we will introduce participants to a comprehensive ethical decision-making framework (Barsky, 2023). In the process, we will demonstrate how the complexity of ethical issues increases as we move from practice with individuals to couples/families, groups, organizations and communities.

PRESENTERS

Dixon is a recently retired associate professor from the School of Social Work at UBC-O. He completed 33 years of teaching BSW and MSW students in many areas, including social history, ethics, research, and social welfare policy.

The presentation will be done with two students, Emily Gretton and Patricia Divina, who have recently completed the requirements for the MSW degree at the UBC-O.
